Covid-19: US to lift travel ban on southern Africa – official

The United States will next week lift the travel ban imposed on several southern African nations when the Omicron variant of Covid was first detected, officials said.

Countries around the world restricted travel from southern Africa after the variant was detected in South Africa, which reported Omicron to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Nov 24.

WHO and the United Nations spoke out against the travel bans, and officials in South Africa said they were being punished for identifying the strain and being transparent.

“The restrictions gave us time to understand Omicron and we know our existing vaccines work against Omicron, esp boosted,” Kevin Munoz, the White House assistant press secretary, said on Twitter.

He said the travel ban would be lifted on Dec 31.

A senior White House official added that with Omicron present across the United States and globally, international travelers from the eight affected countries would not have a significant impact on US cases.

“During the travel pause President Biden reduced the time for pre-departure testing to one day opposed to three days… travelers from these eight countries will be subject to these same strict protocols,” the official said.

The ban applied to South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.

Holiday festivities are expected to further drive up Covid cases in the United States where the heavily mutated Omicron variant is pushing some stretched hospitals — and exhausted health workers — to the brink.

Omicron now accounts for more than 90 percent of all cases in some regions of the country.

The seven-day average of new daily cases is about to pass the Delta peak seen in September, according to non-profit website Covid Act Now.

Intensive care units are running at near-capacity in some states. US health authorities are banking on vaccinations to lower the number of severe Covid cases, and inoculation numbers have been strong all week.

President Joe Biden this week also announced the purchase of 500 million rapid tests by the federal government. However, the additional tests are not expected to be available until January.

Infection rates are soaring across South Africa as a result of the Omicron variant, but fewer people have died or required hospital treatment compared to previous waves of Covid, local health officials say.

Omicron is known to be far more contagious than previous variants of Covid-19 but appears to cause a less severe illness than its predecessors.

Covid-19: Zimbabwe police hunt for coronavirus positive quarantine escapees

Police in Zimbabwe are still searching for 12 COVID-19 positive inmates who escaped from a quarantine center in Beitbridge, Matabeleland South province last Friday.

The inmates were put on mandatory quarantine after they tested positive for the novel virus. They had been deported from neighboring South Africa.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that the hunt for the escapees was still on.

“The deportees are still on the run. We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding their escape,” he said.

There is mandatory quarantine for returning citizens regardless of the results of their COVID-19 tests.

In a statement last week, Nyathi described the escapees as COVID-19 “super-spreaders”.

“The ZRP warns members of the public against intentionally spreading COVID-19 pandemic to unsuspecting relatives, peers and the general public”.

“The police will ensure that the law takes its course on the suspects and anyone who puts the lives of citizens at risk,” Nyath said.

Three suspects arrested in possession of presumably stolen livestock

On Thursday 23 December 2021 members of Mangaung Metro Highway patrol received information about a white Ford Ranger pulling a trailer full of suspected stolen livestock. The team swiftly responded by moving to the N8 National Road between Bloemfontein and Botshabelo where the vehicle was reported to be traveling.

The vehicle was spotted and stopped approximately fifteen kilometers outside Bloemfontein. Inside the Ford Ranger double cab were one African female aged 54 from Waverly in Bloemfontein, the 55-year-old African male from Ramakgari in Moroka and 62-year-old African male from Ratlou in Thaba Nchu.

The police confronted the suspects and asked them about the livestock that was loaded on the trailer. The suspects produced the documents including livestock removal certificates which didn’t correspond with the number and type of animals loaded on the trailer. Loaded on the trailer were thirty-five goats and one sheep.

The three suspects were then arrested for possession of suspected stolen livestock. A case docket was opened at Navalsig Police Station and the suspects detained. They will appear in Bloemfontein Magistrate court on Tuesday 28 December 2021.
