WINDHOEK: Disability Sports Namibia and the Namibia National Paralympic Committee on Tuesday announced the death of promising para-archery athlete Katelyn Venter.
The 18-year-old Venter was a pioneer in para-archery and at the time of her death was awaiting a slot allocation that would have allowed her to make her debut at the International Paralympic Committee 2024 Paris Paralympic Games scheduled for 28 August to 08 September 2024.
The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) expressed their heavy-heartedness at Venter’s passing in a social media post.
‘Katelyn (Venter) was a dedicated athlete and a vibrant member of the para-sports family. Her enthusiasm and commitment to archery inspired us all. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,’ the committee said.
They added that Venter’s presence will be profoundly missed, but her spirit and passion for the sport will forever remain in their hearts.
In an interview with Nampa on Wednesday, NPC Secretary G
eneral, Michael Hamukwaya said the 18-year-old athlete was an upcoming talent and gave her all to the sport of para-archery.
‘Our condolences to the family, mother and father and all her teammates and friends. Katelyn was performing well and loved para-archery sports, and this is a sad time for us as a federation during this upcoming Paralympic Games. She was one of the athletes waiting for the slot from the games and this message came,’ he said.
Hamukwaya added that Venter’s legacy must be kept alive so that the sport of para-archery can grow as well as honouring her memory and celebrating the remarkable life she lived.
