Passing of NPA Deputy Head a ‘Profound Loss’

Cape Town: Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has described the passing of Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions (DNDPP), Advocate Rodney De Kock, as a ‘profound loss’ for South Africa. De Kock passed away on Monday, following a battle with brain cancer, which was diagnosed in December.

According to South African Government News Agency, the passing of Advocate Rodney De Kock is a significant loss to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the legal fraternity, and the nation. He was considered a reliable pillar of strength to the NPA, which is striving to rebuild itself, counteract corruption, and uphold the rule of law in society.

De Kock was appointed as DNDPP in June 2020 by President Cyril Ramaphosa and held the position until his death. His career also included serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions for the Western Cape from 2003 and as the Director of the Legal Aid Board Clinic at the University of Cape Town from 1994 to 1999.

Minister Kubayi highlighted De Kock’s instrumental role in efforts to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system. His wisdom, dedication, and commitment to service are qualities that will be missed, and Kubayi called on those he mentored to follow his exemplary path.
