Police Arrest 23-Year-Old for Alleged Kidnapping and Murder of Teen in Kanyamazane


Kanyamazane: The Police in Kanyamazane have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of a 17-year-old girl. The incident has raised concerns in the community over the safety of young learners.



According to South African Police Service, the family last saw their daughter on Friday, 14 March 2025, at approximately 05:45, as she was heading out to catch a bus to school. Later that day, at around 17:30, police received a complaint regarding an inquest in Extension 16, Kanyamazane.



Upon arrival, police encountered the suspect, who initially posed as a complainant. He led officers to a room where the lifeless body of the victim was found. The suspect claimed the room belonged to his brother and denied any knowledge of the events leading to the girl’s death. The victim was discovered covered with a duvet, still in her school uniform, with a rope around her neck and another piece of rope hanging from the ceiling. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death, but current evidence has led to the suspect being charged with murder.



The suspect is scheduled to appear at the Kanyamazane District Court on Monday, 17 March 2025, to face the charges. Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, has condemned the killing and praised the police for their prompt action in apprehending the suspect.
