Police Constable Fatally Shot in Gqeberha, Investigation Underway


GQEBERHA: The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, and her management are mourning the death of a 29-year-old police constable who was killed while on duty in Gelvandale, Gqeberha. The constable was fatally shot on December 31, 2024, during routine patrols, sparking a call for public assistance in apprehending the suspect.



According to South African Police Service, the incident occurred at approximately 17:35 when two police officers were conducting regular patrols in the Gelvandale area. The patrol vehicle malfunctioned on Kobus Road in Helenvale, prompting them to seek assistance from three community members to restart the vehicle. During this process, the driver of the vehicle heard a gunshot and discovered that the constable had been shot in the head. The constable was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.



The constable’s firearm was reported missing following the shooting, and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has taken over the case for further investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.



Lieutenant General Mene has condemned the killing and emphasized the constable’s dedication to maintaining public safety. She has urged members of the community to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible, appealing for cooperation in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
