Police Launch Manhunt After Violent Cash-In-Transit Heist

Mogwase: Police have initiated an intensive manhunt following a violent cash-in-transit robbery that took place in broad daylight on the afternoon of December 31, 2024. The incident occurred as a cash van, carrying two security officers, was en route from Moruleng village to Mogwase. The suspects, reportedly armed, ambushed the vehicle at Letsheng section, triggering a chaotic scene that culminated in the use of explosives.

According to South African Police Service, the heist unfolded when a Mercedes Benz sedan, emerging from a side road, blocked the cash van just before a speed hump. Armed suspects promptly began firing at an escort vehicle, forcing it to a halt and allowing its crew to escape unharmed. Concurrently, a BMW vehicle obstructed other road users from intervening in the unfolding events.

The security officers inside the cash van were coerced out at gunpoint, with their firearms being seized by the attackers. The suspects then deployed explosives to detonate the cash van, absconding with an undisclosed sum of money. The explosion also set both the Mercedes Benz and the cash van ablaze. The assailants made their escape using three vehicles: a BMW, a white Toyota Fortuner, and a white Ford Ranger double cab bakkie.

Remarkably, despite the violent nature of the heist, no injuries were reported. The police have yet to identify the suspects, who remain at large, and investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible for the brazen crime.
