Post Office branch manager in custody for burglary

KWAZULU-NATAL: A 55-year-old Post Office manager and his two accomplices both aged 30 are in custody following their arrest by Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation team on Saturday, 10 July 2021.

It is alleged that on 8 July 2021, the branch manager left the post office at Mayors Walk Road in Pietermaritzburg locked, safe and secured. The following day he came back to work and noticed that the strong room was opened. He also discovered that an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. A case of business burglary was reported at Prestbury and a case docket was allocated to Hawks members.

On Saturday, members pounced on the manager’s residence and found cash suspected to be stolen from the post office. Preliminary investigation led to his accomplices’ place where more cash was recovered. They were then placed under arrest and charged for business burglary.

They are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court today.
