Postbank Achieves Major Milestone in Social Grant Card Migration

Pretoria: More than 1.8 million social grant beneficiaries have successfully transitioned from SASSA gold cards to Postbank's innovative black cards, marking a significant achievement for the state-owned bank. By the end of August, over 80% of the targeted migrations were completed ahead of schedule, showcasing the effectiveness of the transition strategy.

According to South African Government News Agency, Postbank released a statement on Friday highlighting the smooth progress of the migration process, with no major issues reported. Beneficiaries who have already made the switch are experiencing enhanced card features and convenience. The bank emphasized that the accessibility of card replacement sites, especially those at retail locations where beneficiaries frequently shop, has been positively received. This strategic placement has facilitated easier access to migration services, even for those in rural areas, during regular shopping trips.

The transition was meticulously planned, supported by extensive operational efforts and a public awareness campaign to ensure beneficiaries were informed about the changes and understood the importance of migrating by the deadline. Postbank noted an increase in conversion volumes in provinces such as the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng, which initially had lower migration numbers.

The bank identified that social grant beneficiaries receiving child support grants, predominantly young and mobile mothers, make up 90% of those who have not yet completed the migration. Postbank's Chief Commercial Officer, Thami Cele, confirmed that the migration plan is proceeding as intended. Cele expressed satisfaction with the visible strong response from beneficiaries and the progress made, emphasizing the priority to ensure a smooth transition for all social grant recipients.

To accommodate the transition, Postbank announced extended operating hours for its card replacement sites, now open on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 09H00. Beneficiaries are encouraged to utilize these additional days to complete their migration before the deadline. However, Postbank assured that those who miss the 31 August deadline will continue to receive their social grants, with accounts remaining active. The bank will maintain open card replacement sites post-deadline to assist remaining beneficiaries.

The migration process, free of charge, requires only a valid ID or temporary ID, with no forms necessary. Cards can be collected from any province, independent of where the beneficiary's SASSA grant was approved. The new black cards are operational immediately upon issue, eliminating the need for a visit to a SASSA office. Postbank assures beneficiaries that any balance from the gold card will automatically transfer and remain accessible on the new card.
