Gaborone: President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his heartfelt congratulations to President-Elect Duma Boko, alongside the government and citizens of Botswana, following the conclusion of the country’s elections. During a telephone call, President Ramaphosa praised the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition, led by Boko, for its success in the election.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Umbrella for Democratic Change achieved a landslide victory, marking a significant political shift as the Botswana Democratic Party, which has held power since the country’s independence in 1966, secured only four parliamentary seats by Friday afternoon. The elections in Botswana took place on 30 October 2024.
President Ramaphosa expressed his approval of the prompt establishment of transitional plans between the outgoing administration of President Mokgweetsi Masisi and the incoming administration of President-Elect Boko. “The success of the elections in our sister nation and the seamless transition t
hat is already underway affirms the demonstration of democratic maturity in our region and on our continent. As South Africa, we look forward to deepening our fraternal relations and cooperation with the Republic of Botswana, with outcomes that will benefit both our nations,” President Ramaphosa stated on Saturday.
