Pretoria: President Cyril Ramaphosa takes a ‘very strong dim view’ of a proposed visit to the United States of America by the Cape Independence Advocacy Group to seek the Western Cape’s secession from South Africa.
According to South African Government News Agency, Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya addressed the media on Thursday morning. He emphasized that South Africa’s 1994 constitutional democracy created a unified non-racial state and stressed the importance of maintaining this unity. He stated, “There is no part of our beautiful land that can be allowed to secede.” Magwenya urged citizens to exercise their rights without undermining the country’s constitutional democracy and called for collaborative efforts towards building a better South Africa.
In recent times, South Africa has experienced tensions with the United States, following the promulgation of the Expropriation Act of 2025 and the expulsion of South African Ambassador to the USA, Ebrahim Rasool. Magwenya explained that the new Expropriation Act aligns with democratic land reform policies and replaces the Apartheid-era 1975 Act. He assured that the Act was enacted through the proper legal channels and rejected claims of human rights violations or arbitrary land expropriation.
Regarding Ambassador Rasool’s return, Magwenya urged political formations planning homecoming rallies to avoid actions that could exacerbate the already strained diplomatic relations with the United States.
