Presidential Protection Service Equipped to Safeguard South African Leaders

Pretoria: The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has assured the nation that President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile are in safe hands. Members of the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) assigned to both leaders have been trained to a high level of skill and possess the necessary expertise to avert risks and threats.

According to South African Government News Agency, General Masemola emphasized that the resources allocated for the protection of the Executive are adequate and are designed to prevent any direct and imminent threats. While it is uncommon to discuss the safety and security aspects of the Executive, the National Commissioner found it necessary to reassure the country about the sufficiency of resources assigned to protect the national executive members.

This statement follows a recent shooting incident involving Deputy President Mashatile’s convoy. Mashatile was returning from an ANC meeting in Boksburg when his convoy came under fire. Initially, it was believed that stones were being thrown at the vehicle, but it was later discovered to be gunfire.

General Masemola noted that an extensive investigation was conducted following the incident, with a ballistics report already concluded. Crime Intelligence continues its regular risk and threat assessments on both the President and the Deputy President. The security detail for both leaders has been reinforced, and Masemola expressed gratitude to the PPS members for their dedication in handling the safety of both principals.
