Public Consultations on Eviction Law Amendments to Expand in Mpumalanga and Limpopo

Mbombela: The Department of Human Settlements is set to host public information sessions in Mpumalanga and Limpopo to discuss proposed amendments to the Prevention of Illegal Eviction and Unlawful Occupation of Land (PIE) Amendment Bill. These sessions will take place from 19 May to 21 May 2026, following earlier engagements in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to South African Government News Agency, the first session will be held on 19 May at Valencia Community Hall in the City of Mbombela, Mpumalanga, as well as at Nirvana Community Hall in Polokwane, Limpopo. The initiative will then move to Nkangala District Municipality on 20 May at City Hall in Middelburg, and Gert Sibande District Municipality on 21 May at City Hall in Secunda. In Limpopo, another session is planned for 20 May at Seleka Community Hall in Lephalale, located within the Waterberg District Municipality.

The proposed bill aims to amend the existing Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act, 1998. The focus of the amendment is to regulate the eviction process while ensuring a fair balance between the rights of landowners and unlawful occupiers.

The bill, introduced by Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, was published in the Government Gazette and has been open for public comment for over a month. The deadline for submitting written comments is 16 June 2026. Submissions can be sent via email to [email protected].
