Public Encouraged to Engage in National Treasury’s Renewable Energy Tax Incentive Survey.

Pretoria: The National Treasury has called on all interested parties to participate in an online survey regarding the introduction of two renewable energy tax incentives. These incentives, introduced in the 2023 Budget Review, are the solar energy tax credit under section 6C of the Income Tax Act for individuals who have installed rooftop solar panels between 1 March 2023 and 29 February 2024, and the enhanced deduction for renewable energy under section 12BA of the Income Tax Act for businesses with assets put into use between 1 March 2023 and 28 February 2025.

According to South African Government News Agency, the solar energy tax credit aims to encourage investment in clean energy generation to supplement energy supply, while the enhanced renewable energy incentive is designed to promote private investment in renewable energy to help alleviate the current energy crisis. Both incentives have specific sunset clauses, with the solar energy tax credit expiring on 1 March 2024 and the enhanced deduction for re
newable energy concluding on 28 February 2025.

The objective of the survey is to gather data to evaluate the effectiveness of these renewable energy incentives in achieving their intended goals. The information collected will also inform future tax policies. The survey provides beneficiaries of the incentives and other interested parties an opportunity to share their experiences and insights regarding these measures.

Interested parties are encouraged to respond to the survey by the deadline of 31 January 2025.
