Rape Suspect Re-arrested in Rustenburg After Escape from Custody

Rustenburg: The South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully re-arrested a 23-year-old rape suspect just days after he managed to escape from lawful custody. The suspect was apprehended in Rustenburg, located in the North West province, on Saturday.

According to South African Government News Agency, the suspect was initially arrested in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, on 01 September 2025 on charges of rape. Reports indicate that a 28-year-old woman from the Sisulu location was on her way to her cousin's home when the suspect allegedly accosted her. He purportedly forced her into a nearby house, where the crime took place. The victim managed to escape while the suspect was asleep and reported the incident to the Umzimkhulu police station, leading to his initial arrest later that day.

After his escape, a specialized multi-disciplinary team was assembled to track and re-arrest him. This team included members from National Crime Intelligence (Multi-Dimensional Organised Crime), Rustenburg District Crime Intelligence, Phokeng K9 Unit, and Kokstad Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, with assistance from the Rustenburg Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The SAPS reported that a tip-off guided the team to a specific address in Rustenburg, where the suspect was successfully apprehended in the early hours of Saturday morning. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding his escape from custody.

In a related note, just last month, police across South Africa arrested 2,284 sexual offenders for various crimes, including rape, sexual assault, abduction, attempted rape, and other related offences.
