SADC Parliaments Encouraged to Enhance Climate Legislation and Protect Vulnerable Groups

Durban: Deputy President Paul Mashatile has urged parliaments within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to bolster legislation, enhance oversight, and promote public participation in response to the adverse effects of climate change. Addressing the 58th Plenary Assembly Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum virtually, Mashatile emphasized the critical need for resources to be allocated towards climate change mitigation and adaptation programs, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as women and youth.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Deputy President highlighted the detrimental impacts of climate change, including persistent droughts, extreme weather events, and land degradation, which significantly undermine sustainable development in the SADC region. He underscored the importance of collective action by parliaments to develop sustainable solutions, emphasizing the need for inclusive and effective climate-related programs.

Mashatile also drew attention to the recent G20 outcomes, where the interests of Africa and the Global South were prioritized. He noted the adoption of the G20 Declaration, which focuses on themes of solidarity, equality, and sustainability as pillars of inclusive growth. The declaration also called for reforms to enhance African representation on global platforms, including the United Nations Security Council.

The Deputy President warned that the SADC region remains highly vulnerable to climate shocks, disproportionately affecting women and young people. He stressed that these groups face increased work burdens, health risks, and dangers of gender-based violence and exploitation. Mashatile called for immediate legislative action to align with regional and international climate agreements, advocating for gender-sensitive legislation and renewable energy expansion.

Highlighting South Africa's progress with the Climate Change Bill, Mashatile pointed to the role of parliaments in overseeing government performance in implementing climate laws. He called for unity and decisive leadership across the region to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change, emphasizing that collaborative efforts can lead to significant positive outcomes.

The Deputy President concluded by urging leaders to commit to meaningful action, ensuring that the region thrives despite environmental challenges.
