SANParks Unveils Groundbreaking Biodiversity Offset Bank

Pretoria: The South African National Parks (SANParks) has launched the first-ever SANParks Biodiversity Offset Bank, marking a significant step towards financing and managing the expansion of protected areas in the country.

According to South African Government News Agency, biodiversity offsets are emerging as a viable financing mechanism aimed at expanding and managing protected areas effectively. SANParks emphasized its dedication to securing the nation’s biodiversity through this initiative, which presents an opportunity to enhance the protected area network while facilitating economic development.

The newly established Offset Bank is set to create a national benchmark, offering a model that can be replicated and improved upon by others. SANParks stated that the Biodiversity Offset Bank provides South Africa a unique chance to refine the management of protected areas. It also aids developers in achieving their environmental, social, and governance objectives while supporting the state in fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

SANParks Vision 2040 focuses on developing sustainable and inclusive protected areas that benefit both people and the environment. The initiative’s core pillar is the creation of mega-living landscapes-vast areas where conservation drives social and economic development. The Biodiversity Offset Bank is a crucial instrument supporting this vision by promoting sustainable financing and inclusive growth.

The Offset Bank will strategically acquire land suitable for park expansion, including conservation corridors, strategic water source areas, or critical biodiversity areas that currently lack protection. SANParks will collaborate with government, business, civil society, and communities to ensure the bank operates within the legal and regulatory framework of the country’s Environmental Impact Assessment regime.
