SANRAL Announces Night-Time Closures on N3 in Durban for Bridge Removal

Durban: The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has advised motorists of upcoming night-time closures on the N3 between St James Avenue Interchange and the EB Cloete Interchange. These closures are intended to allow the safe removal of the temporary pedestrian bridge alongside the new Rockdale Bridge currently under construction.

According to South African Government News Agency, SANRAL's KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer, Jason Lowe, stated that the construction of the new Rockdale Road Bridge has progressed to a stage where pedestrians can now be safely accommodated on it. Consequently, the temporary steel pedestrian bridge, which was installed to ensure pedestrian safety during the bridge's construction, will be removed.

The scheduled closures will affect both directions of the N3 from 8pm on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, to 4am on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. This initiative is part of SANRAL's ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic infrastructure along the N2 and N3 corridors.

SANRAL has assured that full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place to ensure safety for both road users and the construction team. The night-time closures have been strategically scheduled to minimize daytime disruption. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and adhere to posted signage and reduced speed limits within construction zones.

Trucks and heavy vehicles are encouraged to delay trips during this period or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are also asked to ensure their drivers are informed of route closures and alternatives affecting commuter routes.
