SANRAL Issues Warning on R61 Blasting Activities in Eastern Cape

Eastern cape: The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced upcoming blasting activities on the R61 between Baziya and All Saints, necessitating a temporary road closure in the Eastern Cape.

According to South African Government News Agency, the blasting will occur on the R61 Section 6, approximately 100 metres off the road at Borrow Pit 1, between km 73.5 and km 76. The scheduled times for the blasting are between 13:00 and 15:00 on Monday, 24 August 2026, and Monday, 7 September 2026.

To ensure road user safety and allow for blasting and clean-up operations, the road will be temporarily closed for about one hour. SANRAL has noted that no suitable alternative routes are available within this section, and any detours, including the N2, will lead to considerably longer travel times than the expected delay during the closure.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to be cautious when using the road. SANRAL Eastern Cape Provincial Head Mbulelo Peterson expressed apologies for any inconvenience these activities may cause.
