During Women’s Month the SAPS Amathole Women’s Network embarked on operation Sikhona over the weekend at focusing on drugs, and non-compliance of the Liquor Act.
While police were busy with their patrols they also conducted stop and searches during which drugs were confiscated and three suspects aged between 20 and 30 years were arrested for possession of drugs. With the assistance of detectives another five suspects were arrested for the contravention of protection orders and assault. Four shebeens were closed and liquor confiscated. As part of the crime prevention strategy police stop and searched people in the CBD and dangerous weapons were also confiscated.
During the manning of roadblocks on the N2 pamphlets were distributed and traffic fines to the value of R4200 were issued.
The Amathole Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu appreciated the initiative by SAPS women to conduct these operations as they assist in crime prevention. He also encouraged to continue with these operation at station level to ensure safety of our community through high visibility and blue lamp patrols.
