SAPS Ready for Planned June 30 Demonstrations, Says Acting Police Commissioner

Johannesburg: Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane has assured South Africans that the South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, including metro and private security, is fully prepared for the planned demonstrations on June 30.

According to South African Government News Agency, extensive planning has been undertaken at national, provincial, and local levels to ensure readiness for the demonstrations. During a media briefing following a meeting with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and the private security industry, Dimpane emphasized the critical role of the private security sector in maintaining stability and aiding in crime prevention efforts.

The collaboration with private security, which involves hundreds of thousands of security officers across the country, acts as a force multiplier for law enforcement due to its extensive technology and operational resources. These officers serve as the initial observers in communities, business districts, industrial areas, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods, contributing significantly to situational awareness through initiatives like the Eyes and Ears Initiative and partnerships with Business Against Crime South Africa.

Dimpane highlighted the strengthened communication channels between SAPS, PSIRA, private security companies, and other stakeholders to ensure public safety. The police service aims to protect lawful and peaceful demonstrations while acting decisively against any criminal conduct. Acts such as road blockages, community intimidation, property destruction, business attacks, looting, and violence will not be tolerated.

The Acting Police Commissioner expressed gratitude to PSIRA, private security leadership, and participating companies for their commitment to public safety. The collaborative efforts are focused on ensuring that the day of the demonstration remains peaceful and stable, preventing a repeat of the destruction and instability experienced in July 2021.

Earlier this week, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia announced that R600 million has been redirected to enhance SAPS's operational readiness for the nationwide demonstrations. The protest, organized by the civic movement March and March and other interest groups, aligns with calls for undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa, prompting increased police preparedness.
