SAPS Western Cape welcomes three life sentences being handed down to rapist and murderer from Strand

The SAPS Western Cape Management welcomes the sentencing of Xolani Lantu (35) today after having been found guilty of the kidnapping, rape and murder of 5-year-old Minentle Lekhakha from Strand. Judge Derek Willie sentenced Lantu in the Cape High Court, as follows: Count 1 for kidnapping the victim: 5 years, Counts 2 and 3 for raping the victim twice: 2 life sentences and Count 3 for murder: one life sentence.

The little girl went missing when she was playing outside her home in Strand with friends on 3 June 2017. Minentle’s grandmother, Thelma Bombela (51), broke off her relationship with Lantu due to him becoming verbally abusive, and little Minentle had to pay for this with her life. Her body was found under a bridge along Broadway Soek Street in the Nomzamo area of Strand and it was established that she had been raped prior to being murdered.

Judge Derek Willie, during sentencing, said that the court had to send a clear message to brazen criminals such as Lantu, who acted full of callousness and without regard for human life, that they will be punished severely when committing such heinous crimes.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, commended the investigating team for the great work they he have done to ensure that justice was served.
