SAWS Issues Multiple Warnings as Intense Cold Front Approaches Southern Africa

Cape town: The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a series of warnings as very cold, wet, and windy conditions are anticipated over various parts of the country. These conditions are expected to affect the southern parts of the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape, the western interior of the Western Cape, as well as the Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi district municipalities of the Eastern Cape. The weather service has predicted these conditions will persist until Tuesday. According to South African Government News Agency, snowfall is expected over the mountains of the Western Cape and the southern parts of the Northern Cape, as well as over the high ground of the Eastern Cape. In response, SAWS has issued several impact warnings to alert residents and authorities about the potential dangers. An Orange Level 8 warning has been declared for disruptive rainfall, which is expected to result in flooding of roads, bridges, and both formal and informal settlements. This warning applies to the mountainous regions of the Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, the western parts of the Theewaterskloof, City of Cape Town, Breede Valley, and Witzenberg local municipalities of the Western Cape until Tuesday. Additionally, an Orange Level 6 warning has been issued for disruptive rainfall affecting the southern West Coast and western parts of the Overberg Districts of the Western Cape. This warning also extends until Tuesday. Similarly, damaging winds and waves have prompted an Orange Level 6 warning along the coast between Lambert's Bay and Cannon Rocks, with potential threats to navigation and coastal infrastructure. Further warnings include an Orange Level 5 warning for damaging interior winds, which could lead to damage of settlements and power interruptions in the central parts of the Western Cape and northern and central parts of the Eastern Cape. These conditions are expected to persist in the Western Cape until Tuesday. SAWS has also issued several Yellow Level warnings for various regions. These include warnings for d amaging winds and waves, disruptive rainfall leading to localized flooding, and disruptive snowfall affecting vulnerable livestock and traffic. Residents in the affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the evolving weather conditions. SAWS continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
