Kuala Lumpur: South Africa and Malaysia are set to enhance their bilateral relations, focusing on trade expansion and strengthened diplomatic ties. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced this initiative during his opening remarks at the Official Talks held at the official residence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Seri Perdana, in Kuala Lumpur.
According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa is visiting Malaysia as part of a broader Southeast Asia tour, which also includes visits to Indonesia and Vietnam. He emphasized the historical significance of this visit and the need to revive and reposition the relationship between South Africa and Malaysia, particularly in trade and investment. The President highlighted the mutual benefits, noting South Africa’s expertise in food production and Malaysia’s advancements in technology.
President Ramaphosa acknowledged the longstanding cooperation between the two countries and pointed out Malaysia’s global influence in sectors such as semi-conductors, technology, and artificial intelligence. He expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration in these areas, which could further solidify the relationship based on shared goals.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa extended an invitation to Malaysia to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which South Africa will host in November 2025. He expressed enthusiasm about Malaysia’s participation, which he believes will elevate the summit’s significance.
