South Africa Launches Electronic Travel Authorisation to Boost Tourism

Durban: Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille announced South Africa's launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) as part of significant reforms in the tourism and immigration ecosystem. De Lille emphasized that this initiative represents a transformative approach to welcoming visitors, enhancing global competitiveness, and expanding the tourism economy.

According to South African Government News Agency, De Lille shared insights at the Electronic Travel Authorisation Workshop during Africa's Travel Indaba at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban. The ETA has already shown substantial impact since its implementation, with high application uptake, fast processing times, and a 94% approval rate for completed applications.

Travelers utilizing the ETA are experiencing swift processing at airports, with dedicated lanes ensuring passage in under 60 seconds. The system's ongoing enhancements include renewals, family profiles, and broader country coverage, thus increasing user-friendliness. De Lille urged attendees to comprehend the ETA's functionality, its integration into businesses, and its role in making travel to South Africa seamless, thereby fostering business growth, job creation, and community benefits.

The theme for this year's Africa's Travel Indaba, "Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa's Tourism Economy," brought together key stakeholders, including African tourism ministers, international buyers, exhibitors, airlines, investors, and tourism stakeholders. The event highlighted the ETA's potential to streamline entry into South Africa, making it a modern and predictable destination for global travelers.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation offers a digital alternative for travelers from eligible countries, eliminating the need for traditional visas for tourism purposes. It is linked to the applicant's passport, allowing multiple entries within its validity. However, the ETA does not permit extended stays for purposes other than tourism, nor does it allow employment in South Africa.

Eligible applicants can apply for an ETA online if arriving at O. R. Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, or Lanseria International Airport, thus enhancing the tourism experience and simplifying cross-border travel.
