Cape Town: The Presiding Officers of Parliament have expressed their sorrow over the passing of Mr Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, the former Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and a pioneering member of South Africa's democratic Parliament.
According to African Press Organization, Mr Mahlangu, affectionately known as "MJ," leaves a significant legacy in political activism, parliamentary leadership, and diplomatic service. Born on October 8, 1952, in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, Mr Mahlangu was part of the cohort of leaders whose activism and bravery were instrumental in South Africa's democratic transition. He played a key role in the historic multiparty negotiations that led to democracy, contributing to the formation of the democratic order and the Constitution.
Beyond his parliamentary contributions, Mr Mahlangu distinguished himself in international diplomacy. He served as South Africa's Ambassador to the United States, High Commissioner to Kenya, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Somalia, and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi. In these capacities, he upheld the values and principles of his parliamentary service, embodying the ideals of South African democracy and representing the nation's voice with honor and commitment.
