Pretoria: As South Africa ushers in the New Year, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed optimism about the country's progress, indicating that foundational advancements are setting the stage for improved outcomes in the coming year.
According to South African Government News Agency, the President acknowledged existing challenges such as unemployment, poverty, inequality, and gender-based violence, but emphasized ongoing government efforts to address these issues. He highlighted the need for collaboration among government, business, labor, civil society, and citizens to tackle these challenges effectively.
President Ramaphosa noted significant economic improvements, mentioning that inflation has decreased, the cost of living is reducing, and the rand has strengthened. He highlighted an upgrade in South Africa's sovereign credit rating, which will facilitate infrastructure investment and social development at a lower cost.
The President pointed to the success of the structural transformation program initiated five years ago. Improvements in Eskom's performance have resulted in a prolonged period without load shedding, while enhancements in the rail network and ports have facilitated better goods transport. A historic budget of over R1 trillion for infrastructure investment over the next three years underscores the government's commitment to revitalizing critical systems.
Public employment initiatives, such as the Presidential Employment Stimulus and the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention, have provided numerous opportunities for South Africans to earn, learn, and build livelihoods. Ramaphosa also highlighted the Youth Employment Service, which has created over 200,000 work experience opportunities for young, unemployed South Africans.
The President reiterated the government's focus on rooting out corruption, citing the recovery of billions of stolen funds through the efforts of the Special Investigating Unit and the Asset Forfeiture Unit. He also mentioned breakthroughs in combating illegal mining, kidnapping, and other crimes.
In a bid to foster national unity, the government launched the National Dialogue and held the first National Convention, aiming to engage society in shaping the country's democratic future. The successful hosting of the first G20 Summit on African soil further elevated South Africa's global standing, with the Leaders' Declaration addressing key global issues.
President Ramaphosa praised the achievements of South African artists, athletes, and professionals who have excelled internationally, and expressed gratitude for the contributions of all South Africans. He urged the nation to remain united and committed to building a better future, while calling on men to respect women and desist from gender-based violence.
