South Africa Sees Significant Increase in International Tourist Arrivals

Pretoria:More than one million international tourists visited South Africa in August 2026, marking a 7.4% increase compared to the same month in 2025.

According to South African Government News Agency, international tourist arrivals in South Africa have now exceeded 7.5 million from January to August 2026. This growth underscores the strong demand for the country as a travel destination and highlights the need to convert this interest into economic benefits, as emphasized by Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille.

Minister de Lille stated that the focus should be on transforming this demand into investments, jobs, and broader economic opportunities. The aim is to offer tourists more attractions and experiences, encouraging longer stays while ensuring the benefits of tourism are distributed across more communities throughout the nation.

The United States remains the largest overseas source market for South Africa, bringing in 37,134 tourists in August, followed by the United Kingdom with 25,749 visitors and Germany with 14,731.

The department noted that South Africa has demonstrated a strong performance in the first half of 2026, achieving 12% growth in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2025. The country ranks among the top 20 best-performing global destinations, according to UN Tourism data for the first half of the year.

To capitalize on this growth, the South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit aims to bring together investors and tourism stakeholders to develop new and expanded tourism products, experiences, and infrastructure.
