Antananarivo: The South African government, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has concluded its participation in the 45th Ordinary Summit of Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government. The summit, which was held in Antananarivo, Madagascar, was convened under the theme: 'Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation and Energy Transition for a Resilient SADC'.
According to South African Government News Agency, the summit saw South Africa elected as incoming Chair of SADC in 2026 and will host the 46th summit in August next year - nearly a decade after the country's first incumbency. During the closing ceremony, President Ramaphosa expressed gratitude for the responsibility entrusted to him and looked forward to welcoming various delegates to South Africa.
SADC Executive Secretary, Elias Magosi, was reappointed and sworn into his position following his initial appointment in 2021. President Ramaphosa extended congratulations to Magosi for his reappointment and acknowledged the Secretariat's efforts in maintaining professionalism and future-proofing the organization.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa congratulated the government and people of Madagascar for successfully hosting the summit. He praised their efforts in planning, logistics, communication, and protocol, which ensured the success of the gathering. The seamless logistics at the Ivato International Conference Centre and vibrant side events showcased Madagascar's capacity as a regional leader.
He also commended President Andry Rajoelina for leading the summit's success, noting that the efforts have strengthened bonds among SADC Member States and elevated Madagascar's standing on the continental stage.
