Cape town: The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has announced a significant investment of R82 million for the procurement and implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in South African football. This initiative is set to address ongoing concerns regarding refereeing decisions, aiming to enhance the integrity, fairness, and quality of domestic competitions.
According to South African Government News Agency, this project is a collaborative effort between the DSAC, the South African Football Association (SAFA), and the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The funding will support the rapid development of a comprehensive project plan, including training programs for referees and officials, technology selection, stadium assessments, and the establishment of a VAR Training Centre.
A portion of the budget will ensure reliable connectivity at stadiums, facilitating the seamless integration of the VAR system. This will also enhance overall stadium safety by improving communication during emergencies, such as locating missing children. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie acknowledged SAFA's commitment to transparency and FIFA compliance, emphasizing the potential of these measures to enhance the integrity and quality of domestic competitions.
A Request for Proposals (RFP) for VAR technology was published by the department, with responses received from potential providers. SAFA's focus on transparency, accountability, and adherence to FIFA's requirements has been praised, with efforts concentrated on appointing a dedicated VAR Project Team and collaborating with the PSL.
The department has urged all stakeholders to proceed with urgency to ensure the effective use of this allocation within the current financial year, paving the way for the successful introduction of VAR in South African leagues.
