SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENT ASSURES IT’S SERIOUS ABOUT CURBING VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN

The South African Parliament has assured that it is serious about curbing violence against children following a request from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC for Parliament to establish a multi-party caucus to tackle the issue.

The Commission had made the call when it recently appeared before Parliament’s Social Development Committee.

Parliament’s Spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, said over the weekend that since the request was made before a committee of Parliament, parliamentary processes would have to be followed.

This might probably happen through a report that must be by that particular committee for the houses of the institution to make a decision. However, we need to emphasise that the issue of violence against children is a matter that Parliament takes very seriously, he added.

As we are talking now, there are various committees of Parliament that are dealing with the matter.”
