BENONI: Benoni Flying Squad members arrested two (02) suspects, recovered suspected stolen goods and one (01) firearm.

Members pulled over a suspicious white Tata truck on the N12 between Springs and Etwatwa off ramps. It was loaded with nineteen (19) bags containing copper cables. Upon investigation it appeared the cables were suspected to be stolen. The driver was immediately arrested and the cables estimated at around R70 000.00 were impounded.

On Saturday, 25 January 2020 at around 14:45 members at the Engen 1 Stop on R21 direction Pretoria were approached by the driver of a white Sprinter bus. Passengers also started exiting the vehicle. While one member was listening to a complaint that a cell phone had been stolen the other member noticed one passenger was carrying a firearm. He approached the suspect and asked to see a license for the firearm, the suspect could not produce one. The member took the firearm off the suspect and noticed the firearm had no serial number. He immediately placed the suspect under arrest and started leading him to the police car. The suspect was fighting with the officer in an attempt to take back his firearm. Both the suspect and the officer ended up on the ground which resulted in the suspect fatally wounded. The unidentified suspect is estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old. A 9mm pistol with no serial number, two (02) magazines and 30 rounds were recovered on the scene. A case of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm was opened and is being investigated.

The suspect, aged 32, arrested for copper cables will be appearing in the local Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of suspected stolen goods
