Pretoria: The Presidency has invited all South Africans to nominate outstanding individuals for the prestigious National Orders, with the deadline fast approaching. The initiative encourages citizens to recognize those who have served the nation or achieved significant personal milestones both nationally and globally. National Orders are the highest accolades awarded by South Africa to its citizens and distinguished foreign nationals.
According to South African Government News Agency, the President, as the fount of honour in the country, bestows these Orders with assistance from the Director-General in The Presidency, who acts as the Chancellor of National Orders, alongside the Advisory Council on National Orders. Phindile Baleni, the Chancellor of National Orders, is urging citizens to participate in the nomination process to uphold the integrity and inclusivity of this institution, which serves as a platform for social cohesion and nation-building.
Baleni emphasized the role of National Orders in recognizing South Africans and global individuals who have made significant contributions across various sectors, from politics to popular culture, and acts of bravery. "We invite people from all walks of life, including the youth, to identify those deserving of a National Order based on exceptional achievements or contributions," Baleni stated.
The National Orders include the Order of Mapungubwe for excellence and exceptional achievement, the Order of the Baobab for distinguished service, and the Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo for foreign nationals who have shown friendship to South Africa. Additionally, the Order of Luthuli recognizes contributions to democracy and human rights, the Order of Ikhamanga for excellence in arts and sports, and the Order of Mendi for Bravery for acts of exceptional courage.
Nomination forms, available at https://www.thepresidency.gov.za/national-orders-booklets-18, require a motivation including a summary of the nominee's achievements, exceptional milestones, and outstanding service or acts of bravery. The deadline for nominations is 31 August 2025, with details of the National Orders Ceremony to be announced later by the Presidency.
