Suspect Arrested After Cross-Provincial Operation Leads to Safe Return of Businessman

Gqeberha: A combined intelligence-driven operation across provincial borders led to the arrest of a suspect and the safe return of a kidnapped businessman from Maletswai.

According to South African Police Service, it is alleged that on 23 July 2025, a Hyundai SUV was hijacked at Kwazakele in Gqeberha and driven towards Maletswai (Aliwal North). At approximately 20:40, it was determined that the vehicle was involved in the kidnapping of an Ethiopian businessman in Maletswai.

All available information was pursued, and through a combined intelligence-driven operation, the vehicle was located in Rouxville town (Free State). The operational team identified the vehicle, prompting a high-speed chase to Raletunya Township, where the vehicle came to a standstill.

Four suspects exited the vehicle and fled. The SAPS successfully arrested one 32-year-old suspect from Motherwell in Gqeberha. The kidnapped victim was rescued unharmed.

The investigation continues as authorities work to trace the remaining suspects. Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem commended the operational team for their successful cross-district and provincial efforts that ensured the victim's safe return.
