WESTERN CAPE – Efforts to curb corruption within the transport industry led to a crime intelligence driven operation conducted by the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, Crime Intelligence and the Department of Transport where six suspects aged between 32 and 65 were arrested yesterday. The arrests were preceded by an investigation into irregular activities at three vehicle road worthy testing stations.
After alarm was raised by members of the public an investigation was initiated at the testing stations. The investigating team gathered information and successfully conducted an undercover operation simultaneously in Goodwood, Philippi and Lansdowne where the six suspects including a foreign national were arrested on charges of fraud and corruption. The suspects are expected to appear before the Goodwood and Wynberg Magistrate’s courts respectively on Monday.
In an unrelated investigation, members of the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit arrested a 52 year old British national yesterday in Llandudno on charges of fraud. Documentation and computer equipment were also seized as evidence in the case pertaining the fraudulent letting of property in the Cape Town area. He too is expected to make his court appearance in Wynberg on Monday.
