Swift response leads to arrest of four suspects

On 18 February 2022, the police in Douglasdale swiftly reacted to an alleged hijacking incident at Kya Sands informal settlement.

It is reported that the victim, who owns a driving school received a call from an unknown man under the pretence that he needed a driver’s license. The victim who was travelling with his family agreed to meet with the “client” at a certain place in the informal settlement. While in the meeting, the victim was accosted by more suspects who pointed him with a firearm. The suspects drove off with the victim’s vehicle with the whole family inside to Pipeline sportsground where money was demanded and the victim was assaulted. Money was transferred through e-wallets and the victim’s bank card and pin was accessed by the suspects.

Later during that day, the police were informed about the incident and they promptly followed up on information which led them to the victims. Four suspects were arrested and the victim together with his wife and two minor children were safely rescued.

An unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found in possession of the suspects.

All four suspects aged between 36 and 40 years will appear at Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of hijacking, kidnapping, possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and extortion.

Management of Douglasdale police station applauds the members for their vigilance and swift reaction which led to rescue of the victims and arrest of the perpetrators.
