Tributes Continue to Pour in for Actress Nandi Nyembe

Johannesburg: Tributes have been flowing in for the legendary actress Nandi Nyembe, affectionately known as Mam' Nandi, following her passing on Saturday, 23 August 2025, at the age of 75. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR) has been among those paying their respects to the revered actress.

According to South African Government News Agency, Mam' Nandi was not just a talented actress but also a cultural torchbearer whose work mirrored the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of South Africans. Her performances provided a voice to the stories of her nation, leaving an indelible mark on the country's artistic and cultural landscape. Chairperson of the SACR Portfolio Committee Disebo Tlebere expressed that her passing is a significant loss to both the creative sector and the soul of South Africa.

Mam' Nandi's illustrious career spanned several decades, during which she graced both stages and screens across South Africa. She became a household name with her memorable role as Nandi Sibiya in Zone 14, and further enriched South African storytelling through her outstanding portrayals in productions such as Yizo Yizo, Izoso Connexion, Isibaya, Isithembiso, and House of Zwide, among many others.

Her versatility as an actress extended to feature films, with notable performances in Reasonable Man (1999), Saturday Night at the Palace (1987), and the award-winning Yesterday (2004). The Committee has expressed its deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues, and millions of fans both in South Africa and beyond, who are left heartbroken by this loss.
