ELSIES RIVER: Continued efforts to combat gang violence and related crimes in the Western Cape have led to the arrest of two individuals for illegal firearm possession in the Elsies River area on Tuesday evening.
According to South African Police Service, members of the Elsies River Crime Prevention Unit were conducting operations in the Avonwood area when they apprehended a 23-year-old man. The man was found with a 9mm pistol and nine rounds of ammunition, for which he could not provide a license or permit. He was subsequently arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
In a separate incident, members of the Anti-Gang Unit stopped and searched a 28-year-old man on 14th Avenue in Leonsdale. The suspect was in possession of a 9mm pistol and 14 rounds of ammunition. He also faces charges for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Both suspects are scheduled to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 3, 2025, to face the respective charges. The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to curb gang-related activities in the region.
