Groblersdal: The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit for their successful effort in securing two life sentences for a 36-year-old man. The man was found guilty of rape and sexual assault against his 15-year-old stepson.
According to South African Government News Agency, the abuse began in 2019. The stepfather, residing with the victim and his mother in the Masakaneng Informal Settlement in Groblersdal, would return home inebriated and molest the minor. The situation escalated as the stepfather forced himself on the victim, committing acts of rape and using degrading language. This abuse continued for four years until the victim finally confided in his mother in 2024. She promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused on October 11, 2024, at his workplace on a local farm by officers from the Groblersdal FCS Unit.
Warrant Officer Victoria Lekgala Phala was assigned to the case and played a crucial role in ensuring the accused faced justice. Despite several court appearances and being granted bail at one point, the accused was ultimately found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The Groblersdal Regional Court sentenced the man to two life terms of imprisonment for rape and an additional five years for sexual assault. Furthermore, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Hadebe, expressed approval of the severe sentence, emphasizing its significance in deterring gender-based violence and child abuse, assuring that law enforcement will persistently pursue justice in such cases.
