Two lives lost on B1 in crash of two passenger buses

Two women died in the early hours of Tuesday after the buses they were travelling in reportedly collided on the B1 road between Otavi and Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) head of community affairs in the region, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha in a media statement on Tuesday said the accident occurred at approximately 01h30 on Tuesday morning, about 57 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo.

It is alleged that an Intercape passenger bus was transporting 59 passengers from Oshakati to Windhoek, and it collided with an Iveco minibus headed in the opposite direction, Mbeha said.

‘It is further alleged that the Iveco minibus overtook another vehicle and in the process the head-on collision with the Intercape bus occurred,’ Mbeha stated.

A woman who is yet to be identified, died on the spot from Intercape, while another passenger from the Iveco who was seriously injured died while on the way to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital, said Mbeha.

A male driver for Intercape sustained seri
ous injuries on both legs and is expected to be transferred to a private medical facility in the Oshana Region, said Mbeha.

Several passengers from both buses who sustained minor to serious injuries were transported to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital where they received medical treatment.

According to the police officer, the names of the deceased persons were still unknown on Tuesday morning, adding that a culpable homicide docket has been opened at the Otjiwarongo Police Station.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
