Johannesburg: The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecasted very cold and wet conditions, accompanied by light snowfall, to commence from Wednesday evening across various regions including the Eastern Cape, southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, southern Free State, and the Lesotho border. The adverse weather is attributed to the movement of a cut-off low pressure system, which is expected to clear from the west by Thursday. According to South African Government News Agency, farmers in the affected areas have been advised to implement precautionary measures to mitigate the potential negative impacts of such severe weather conditions. The weather service has also projected partly cloudy and cold conditions for Thursday and Friday in the eastern parts of South Africa, with the possibility of isolated to scattered rain and showers, while other regions may experience fine and cool weather. In anticipation of the inclement conditions, SAWS has issued several warnings for Wednesday. An Orange Level 6 Warning predicts disruptive rain, potentially leading to flooding of bridges, roads, and settlements, as well as damage to property and infrastructure along the coast and adjacent interior areas between East London (Eastern Cape) and Cape Vidal (KwaZulu-Natal). An Orange Level 5 Warning has been issued for disruptive snowfall, expected to cause traffic disruptions and temporary isolation of some communities over the extreme north-eastern high-ground of the Eastern Cape. Additionally, a Yellow Level 2 Warning for disruptive snow is in place for the north-eastern high-ground of the Eastern Cape and the Drakensberg area of KwaZulu-Natal, with potential for similar disruptions. Furthermore, a Yellow Level 2 Warning for disruptive rain has been issued for the south-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, excluding the extreme north-east, with the potential for flooding and damage to infrastructure.
