Water and Sanitation on Clanwilliam Dam Project

Community Liaison Committee established for the Clanwilliam Dam Project

The efforts to share information about the raising of Clanwilliam Dam Project were given a boost when the Community Liaison Committee (CLC) was established on Monday 30th May 2022.

Ms Karin van Aardt, from the Department’s Chief Directorate: Infrastructure Development says the objective of the CLC is to provide a forum where meaningful and open dialogue can be held between the local community, landowners and interested and affected parties (IAPs) and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). It further provides a vehicle for the Department to better understand the issues the local community, landowners and IAPs might have relating to the raising of the Clanwilliam Dam project, thus allowing the DWS the opportunity to address the issues to everyone’s satisfaction.

The committee includes representation from amongst others:

• Departmental stakeholders (Chief Directorate: Infrastructure Development, Chief Directorate: Project Implementation Construction South and Chief Directorate: Engineering Services or Employer’s Agent Representative and the DWS Western Cape Regional Office)

• Water and Sanitation Forum Chairpersons; Cederberg and Matzikama Municipal delegates, West Coast District Municipality delegate, Clanwilliam South African Police Services; Clanwilliam Water Users Association; Lower Olifants Water Users Association (LORWUA); Agri Western Cape Cederberg; Affected Residents and Homeowner Associations including Local Community Landowners; Homeowner Associations; and Rate Payers; Chamber of Commerce: Clanwilliam etc.

The CLC will sit once a month to deliberate on matters related to the project, or if urgent matters must be addressed special meetings will be arranged.

During the inception meeting yesterday, Mr. Jan Oosthuizen of the Community Police Forum (CPF) was elected as the Chairperson while Mr. Tshepiso Segaecho, who is a member of the Matzikama Water & Sanitation Forum was elected Deputy Chairperson.
