Western Cape Education Department Prepares for 2026 School Year

Cape town: The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has announced its readiness for the upcoming 2026 school year. Educators and school-based staff are set to return on Monday, 12 January 2026, with learners commencing their first term on Wednesday, 14 January 2026. The department emphasized the importance of this period as hundreds of thousands of young learners embark on their educational journey.

According to South African Government News Agency, the WCED highlighted that parents play a crucial role in preparing their children for the academic year. This preparation includes ensuring children are ready for school each day, thus laying the groundwork for their independence and success in adulthood. The department urged parents to carefully review all communications from schools, as these often contain vital information about stationery, uniforms, and other necessities.

The WCED has proactively ensured that essential educational materials are ready for the start of the school year. Schools were given the opportunity to order additional textbooks between 12 and 23 May 2025, with deliveries completed by October 2025, amounting to R58.7 million. Additionally, stationery worth R25.3 million was delivered to non-section 21 schools by November 2025, with an extra R31.6 million in goods delivered by December 2025.

The department is also addressing the challenge of late school applications for the 2026 academic year. As of 7 January 2026, 96% of learners applying for Grade R, 1, and 8 have been placed, with efforts ongoing for the remaining 7,540 learners. Since 1 November 2025, the WCED has received 10,666 late applications, which complicate planning for learner placement, resource distribution, and staffing.

The WCED is actively working to secure placements for learners still awaiting allocation. Starting Monday, the department will collaborate with school principals and management teams to identify available spots. The WCED also plans to conduct a 10-day snap survey to gather data on student numbers per grade, allowing for adjustments in resources and placement opportunities.

Parents who have not yet applied for the 2026 school year are encouraged to do so immediately at their local education district office.
