World Wildlife Day Highlights Urgent Need for Conservation Finance

Cape Town: Today marks 12 years since the United Nations declared March 3 as World Wildlife Day. The 2025 commemoration is themed “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet.” The focus is on the significance of sustaining efforts to preserve wildlife and the ecosystem for future generations.

According to South African Police Service, many species of wild animals and plants are facing extinction due to criminal syndicates that dehorn rhinos and elephants, illegally trade in abalone, hunt lions for bones without a permit, and sell cycads plants to overseas markets. The Hawks’ mandate is to prevent and investigate such crimes.

The public is urged to report crimes relating to wildlife to 051 412 3173 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
