Provincial Commissioner condemns ongoing incidents of gender based violence

POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe strongly condemns ongoing incidents of gender-based violence following an incident that took place today Sunday, 22 January 2023 in Seshego outside Polokwane where a 45 year old man allegedly assaulted and killed his girlfriend and thereafter hanged himself.

Police were summoned to the scene at a house in Extention 133 at about 07:00 and on their arrival, they found the body a 41-year-old woman with bruises on her back lying inside the bedroom and that of her boyfriend hanging from the roof rafters in the passage. It is believed that the boyfriend assaulted his girlfriend until she lost her life and then hanged himself.

The two bodies were only discovered in the morning by the two children aged 9 and 13.The deceased were identified as Rachel Madubanya (41) and her boyfriend Albert Mokgonyana (45).

The motive behind the incident is unknown at this stage but domestic violence cannot be ruled out.

“We are very saddened by the incident and still urge community members who are experiencing domestic challenges to seek help immediately instead of resorting to violence,” concluded Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

Police have opened cases of murder and inquest. Investigations are continuing.

Murder and attempted murder suspects arrested in seperate incidents

GQEBERHA – Police in Gqeberha arrested a murder and an attempted murder suspect this weekend in separate incidents in Bethelsdorp and Kabega Park respectively.

In the first incident, it is alleged that on Wednesday, 18 January 2023 at about 13:30, the complainant (24) was standing in Scholtz Street in Bloemendal when the suspect walked past with his son from school. The suspect pointed the complainant with a firearm. The complainant had walked away and while he was in Aspelling Street in Bloemendal, the suspect returned and fired a shot at the complainant but missed.

On Saturday, 21 January 2023, SAPS Bethelsdorp detectives arrested the 28-year-old suspect and detained him on a charge of attempted murder. He will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate court on Monday, 23 January 2023.

A 41-year-old woman will appear in the St Alban’s magistrate court on Monday, 23 January 2023 on a charge of murder following the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man from Gro-Gro informal settlement last night, 21 January 2023.

It is alleged that at about 22:40, a group of friends were drinking in a shack when an argument broke out between them. In the ensuing argument, the 26-year-old man was stabbed in his chest by the wife of one of his friend’s. The suspect was arrested on the scene and detained.

Western Cape police crime combatting operations yield successes

WESTERN CAPE – The proliferation of illegal firearms, liquor and drug abuse as well as other crime generators remain a priority in the Western Cape with multi-disciplinary forces embarking on Crime combatting operations during the past weekend which yielded positive results.

The weekend kicked off on Friday, 20 January 2023 with integrated forces pouncing onto Harare and Mazhaza policing precincts, spearheaded by the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen (Adv.) T Patekile and members of the provincial management. Members performed high density foot and vehicle patrols, focussing on crime combatting operations, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, high visibility and compliance inspections to curb the prevalence of crime in these precincts, which proved to be effective. During these focussed operation, members confiscated high quantities of liquor (more than a million ml (1 049 650ml) of beer, 531 340ml of Ciders and 25 300ml of Spirits) and smaller quantities of illegal drugs such as Tik and Heroin. Various suspects were arrested who are expect to make their first court appearances in various court tomorrow, facing charges of illegally dealing in liquor and the possession of prohibited drugs.

Members also arrested 19 undocumented foreign nationals and handed them over to Immigration officers attached to Dept. of Home Affairs for further handling and processing. The high density patrols of integrated forces attributed to a decline in the amount of complaints and crime police normally encounters over a weekend.

In addition to the above, members of the Operation Restore deployed in Delft followed up on information about the drugs being stored at the premises in Buffalo Crescent, The Hague, earlier this morning, Sunday, 22 January 2023. On their arrival at the premises, permission to search was granted by the owner and during the search members found and confiscated a consignment of drugs consisting of Mandrax tablets, concealed in packets as well as loose and solid crystal meth (Tik), heroine (Unga), ecstasy tablets and a few rounds of ammunition. They continued with the search and found an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be the proceeds of crime. A 37-year-old man was arrested for Dealing in Drugs, Possession of Drugs and the unlawful possession of ammunition. He will appear in court once charged.

On Saturday, 21 January 2023at 23:30, members attached to Operation Restore were patrolling in Wesbank Main road when they heard gun shots and quickly responded by following the direction from where the gunfire was coming from. Whilst pursuing the investigation into the gunfire, the members saw a suspicious man standing in Millwood Street. Members accosted the suspect and ensued with a search. They found a black 9mm pistol with serial number filed off and 5 (five) 9mm rounds in his possession. The 21 years old man was arrested and detained at Mfuleni SAPS on a charge of Illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in the Bluedowns magistrate court, once charged.

Provincial management commended the members for their continued commitment to rid our streets from the scourge of illegal firearms and drugs that is killing our citizens.

Intelligence driven operation yield positive results

EASTERN CAPE – An operation, conducted by Organised Crime and Queenstown Public Order Policing members, resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man who was detained on a charge of dealing in drugs.

Members acted upon information received of the suspect who was delivering drugs at a house at Pambo Street, Mlungisi. The house was searched and drugs to the value of R15 000 was confiscated.

The suspect was arrested and will appear before Queenstown magistrate court on Monday 23 January 2023.
