Lagos workers to continue enjoying work-from-home policy


Lagos State Government has extended its work-from-home policy for its workers for the next three months.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the extension in a circular signed by the state Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro, on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, on Feb. 28, the governor directed that the workers would work remotely on some days.

He directed that workers on grade levels 01 to 14 were allowed to work from home for two days in a week, while those on grade level 15 to 17 were allowed to work from home for one day in a week.

The decision was aimed at reducing the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy on the workers.

Sanwo-Olu stated in the Wednesday’s circular that the policy made positive impacts on workers’ productivity in the various ministries, departments and agencies of the state government.

NAN reports that the extension took effect from Sept. 4.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says the combination of right strategies, investments, and partnerships will enable Nigeria harness its competitive advantage and present a bright agricultural future.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya, made the assertion at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Agro Fair and Symposium on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event had as its theme, ‘Nigeria Food Production in Global Space: Leveraging Our Competitive Advantage’.

The governor said that agriculture had always been the backbone of the country’s economy, hence the need to explore new frontiers in food production using the vast potentials within Nigeria’s borders.

He said that Nigeria, blessed with abundant natural resources, a favorable climate, and a hardworking population, was uniquely positioned to feed the growing population and be a major player in the global food market.

The governor, however, stres
sed that realising the country’s potential required more than just acknowledging its resources.

‘It demands a strategic approach that maximises our competitive advantages and addresses the challenges that have historically impeded our progress.

‘We must harness our competitive advantage in the global food production space.

‘It requires that we take ownership of our diverse agricultural ecosystems that offer the opportunity to produce a wide range of crops and livestock and target niche markets globally.

‘We must intentionally deploy our large and growing workforce by investing in education and training, particularly in modern agricultural techniques and agribusiness.

‘We should also transform this workforce into a formidable asset that supports a thriving agro-economy ‘ he said.

The governor also revealed that Lagos state had implemented a series of strategies and innovations aimed at enhancing its contribution to Nigeria’s food
production on a global scale, leveraging the country’s competitive advantages.

These initiatives, he said, were designed to position Lagos as a key player in the global agricultural market, ensuring that Nigeria capitalises on its natural resources, strategic location, and growing population.

‘As we seek to position Nigeria as a global leader in food production, collaboration between government, private sector, and international partners will be vital.

‘Government, both state and federal, are committed to creating an enabling environment that encourages investment, fosters innovation, and supports sustainable agricultural practices.

‘But we cannot do it alone. The private sector must lead the way in driving innovation, adopting best practices, and expanding market reach,’ he said.

Mr Gabriel Idahosa, President, LCCI, said that Nigeria was at crossroads, facing unprecedented challenges in its food systems in the face of unique opportunities that could redefine its position in the global agricultural lands
cape.

He said that Nigeria must not ignore the urgent food crisis it was facing with food inflation, and skyrocketing number of food-insecure Nigerians, facing acute hunger.

The LCCI president, while commending import waivers given for some food imports, said that we must be deliberate in building the capacity of local food producers to meet the demands of Nigerians.

Idahosa said that Nigeria must become more diligent in its fiscal policy direction while initiating specially targeted programmes for food production.

‘We must invest in agricultural research to boost our output through improved seedlings, disease prevention, and the deployment of modern technology for agricultural mechanisation.

‘The National Food Security Council must be expanded to include key stakeholders at the federal and state levels, while an urgent, coordinated hunger response involving public, private, and civil society sectors is needed.

‘Our food security an
d production challenges are daunting, yet our competitive advantages provide a solid foundation to build a resilient and globally competitive agricultural sector ,’ he said.

Chairman, LCCI Agro-Allied Symposium 2024, Mr Kola Aderibigbe, said that Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem needed to address global food security challenges and transform agrifood through continued innovation, collaboration, and strategic implementation.

Aderibigbe noted the need to cure Nigeria from the mentality of consumption society to sustainable food production which requires collective efforts.

According to him, Nigeria does not lack the resources to develop from within.

He said that from natural to human resources, the country stood out with abundant endowments that beg for effective and efficient utilisations.

He added that Nigeria needed to make agriculture attractive to the youth by continually getting them engaged positively and developing their interest in agri business through digitalisation, creative art, security and f
unding.

‘It is the young population that can assist to drive the transformational change required to take preeminence top position in Nigeria food production in global space.

‘Government must assist in improving the nation security architecture to promote security of farmers, promote innovation, enhance farmers’ access to high-quality seeds to support sustainable agriculture.

‘Agriculture ecosystems as a new economy frontier in Nigeria has the potential to revolutionise Nigeria economy from healthcare, environmental sustainability, food production and security, financial sustainability, education.

‘This can be a game changer and transformer from obscurity to abundance and transform Nigeria in to an enviable space globally,’ he said.

Dadin-Kowa Dam secure, fully functional- FG


The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, has assured the public that the Dadin-Kowa Dam in Gombe State is in excellent condition, with no threats to its functionality.

In a statement issued after his inspection of the dam on Wednesday, Utsev noted that the dam had undergone rigorous daily monitoring and regular inspections.

Utsev confirmed that the dam was operating optimally, supporting hydropower generation, irrigation, and water supply.

He said that all key infrastructure components, including the spillway and penstock, were functioning as intended.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation’s commitment to maintaining water infrastructure across Nigeria.

He urged the public to dismiss unfounded rumours about the dam’s condition and assured that his ministry remained dedicated to providing accurate and timely updates on all water infrastructure projects.

He stressed the ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance food production, job creation,
and economic growth.

Utsev also underscored the ongoing benefits of the Dadin-Kowa Dam, particularly through the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMMING) Project and the upcoming Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project.

This, he added, was aimed at improving irrigation, dam safety, and power generation nationwide.

Dr Bello Goronyo, the minister of state of the ministry, at the visit stressed the importance of accurate information and expert consultation to prevent the spread of misinformation.

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding vital national assets in alignment with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Mr Caleb Tyowuah, Acting Managing Director of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority, confirmed that the Dadin-Kowa Dam had a live storage capacity of 1.77 million cubic metres.

He added that the dam had no integrity issues and was currently irrigating 2,100
hectares out of the planned 30,000 hectares of land, while also generating 40 megawatts of electricity.

Mr Jayaharan Paul, Project Manager at Mabon Energy Limited, which operates the Dadin-Kowa Hydropower Plant, also affirmed the dam’s robust condition and its huge contribution to the region’s power supply.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister was accompanied by a team of water resources experts during his visit.

NAN reports that Abubakar Yelwa, Managing Director, National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), had raised the alarm that the Dadin-Kowa Dam was on the verge of collapse.

He called for urgent measures to avert the looming disaster, which had become a significant threat to people and communities living near the facility.

Yelwa also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on flood disasters, noting that the menace has been ravaging several communities in 28 states across the federation.

REDAN appoints committees to support FG’s housing efforts


The Real Estate Developer’s Association of Nigeria (REDAN) has appointed 24 committees, comprising more than 100 members, to support the Federal Government’s efforts in addressing the housing needs of Nigerians.

The President and Chairman of REDAN, Akintoye Adeoye, made this known at a news conference to outline the organisation’s vision for the future of real estate development in Nigeria.

Adeoye said that the committees would assist the REDAN 7th Council in realising its vision, which focuses on key areas like advocacy, transparency, innovation, professionalism, sustainability, and membership.

‘To further support the government’s efforts in addressing the housing needs of Nigerians, and in line with our mission, I am pleased to officially announce the appointment of 24 committees, comprising over 100 dedicated members of the association,’ Adeoye said.

He explained that the newly formed committees would cover a wide range of responsibilities, from engaging with government agencies and legislative bodies
to promote alternative building materials and sustainable practices.

‘We deeply appreciate the efforts of the men and women who have volunteered their time, resources, and expertise to serve on these committees.

‘Their contributions will not only shape the future of our association but also play a crucial role in repositioning Nigeria’s housing sector,’ Adeoye said.

He commended the outstanding leadership of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, adding that his significant achievements within just one year have greatly advanced the Renewed Hope agenda.

Shettima advocates strong alliance to end poverty, improve lives of Nigerians


Vice-President Kashim Shettima has called for a formidable alliance among key players in governance to wriggle Nigerians out of poverty and enhance the quality of lives of all citizens.

Shettima spoke on Wednesday during the 144th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also emphasised the need for those in the business of governance to collaborate to create an environment where every Nigerians have the opportunity to thrive.

Shettima, however, acknowledged that Nigerians are in urgent need of quick and impactful measures, which President Bola Tinubu was solving through the implementations of long-term solutions.

‘Our commitment to alleviating poverty and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians will never materialize if we do not align with one another.

‘ We must strive to create an environment where every Nigerian has the opportunity to thrive.

‘This includes not only addressing immediate needs but also building sustainable systems that empower
our citizens to become self-reliant and prosperous.’

He commended the efforts of development partners, particularly the co-chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr Bill Gates.

He also applauded the Chairman of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who were at the NEC meeting.

He described Dangote and Gates as ‘two distinguished individuals whose commitment to Nigeria’s progress is unparalleled’.

He said that the two have invested enormous resources into the welfare of Nigerians, spanning critical areas such as health, nutrition, agriculture, and education.

On his part, Mr Gates reiterated his bet on the incredible potential of Nigerians, noting that ‘Nigeria’s economic leaders have done some difficult, but necessary things, like unifying the exchange rate.

‘The next great hurdle is raising revenue. I understand this is a politically sensitive area where Nigerians a
re struggling. Incomes have fallen.

‘ Prices have soared. And like in many other countries, people are protesting.’

He described Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda as ambitious.

Gate, however, said the Nigerian leader has assembled a cabinet ready to meet the challenge, adding that ‘with limited resources, putting the funds to the best possible use is key’.

According to him, the account currently stands at $473,754.57, the Natural Resources Fund has a balance of N3,451,078,538.57, and the Stabilisation Account holds N33,875,398,389.75.

FOCAC instrumental to $280bn trade between Africa, China – Tinubu


President Bola Tinubu says the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has been instrumental to the flourishing economic partnership and trade between Africa and China, which has grown to about 280 billion dollars.

Tinubu said this in his opening remarks at the the 2024 FOCAC Summit holding in Beijing, China, from Sept. 4 to Sept. 6.

He said the establishment of FOCAC in 2000 had been pivotal in strengthening economic ties and reaffirming the commitment of China and African countries to mutual progress.

He said one of the highest points of the collaboration between Africa and China was the flourishing economic partnership and trade between Africa and China, which had grown to about 280 billion dollars.

According to him, this impressive figures speak volumes about the extent of the economic relationship and expanding integration of African and Chinese markets.

He also said the China-African relationship was built on a foundation of trust, mutual respect and the pursuit of common goals.

‘As we look to
the future, it is crucial that we maintain the momentum, peaceful dialogue, transparent business practices, diplomatic, conflict resolution remains at the forefront of our efforts.

‘These values will ensure that the bond between Africa and China continue to deepen and benefit both regions for the generations yet to come.

‘The partnership is not only about shared history, it is driven by a bold collective vision for the future. By pulling our strength and resources, we can unlock unprecedented level of growth and development for our nations,’ said Tinubu.

The Nigerian leader said the Africa and China relationship was a bond that had not only endured but grown stronger since its inception in the early 50s.

d partnership spanning trade, investment and diplomacy,’ he said.

He said China had consistently demonstrated its commitment to Africa, not only through financial and developmental support, but also through cultural changes that brought China and African countries closer.

NAN reports that FOCAC is the most comprehensive platform that promotes the China-Africa relationship.

Since its inception in 2000, FOCACaims to, among other things, foster cooperation for the development of China and Africa, with China supporting the implementation of the African Union’s 2063 Agenda – the blueprint for turning Africa into a future economic power house.
