Johannesburg: The Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) Minister, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is set to host the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit (AGHS) 2026 in Cape Town next week. The event will be guided by the theme, 'Moving Africa's Green Hydrogen Sector from PowerPoint to Gigawatts,' highlighting its focus on advancing from theoretical discussions to tangible developments in the green hydrogen sector.
According to South African Government News Agency, the AGHS has emerged as Africa's premier platform for green hydrogen and Power-to-X development. Evolving from the South Africa Green Hydrogen Summits held in 2022 and 2023, the summit now serves as a continental forum that brings together African governments, international investors, civil society, academia, and technology experts. The goal is to explore Africa's potential to emerge as a global leader in green hydrogen.
The DEE has outlined that AGHS 2026 will emphasize project implementation, financing, infrastructure development, and industrialization across Africa. South Africa's green hydrogen ambitions are evident in its national policy instruments, including the Hydrogen Society Roadmap, the Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy, and the Just Energy Transition framework. The department asserts that green hydrogen presents an opportunity for Africa to play a pivotal role in the global market, leveraging its renewable energy resources, mineral endowments, and industrial demand.
This year's summit will focus on several key areas. Projects moving towards implementation will be showcased, highlighting South African and African initiatives advancing from development to commercial deployment. Finance mobilization is another priority, with new initiatives aimed at enhancing project bankability and attracting both domestic and international capital.
The summit will also address the creation of markets and demand for green hydrogen, demonstrating its commercial applications in decarbonizing transport, industry, and other sectors. Industrialization and technology development will be discussed, emphasizing efforts to strengthen local manufacturing and develop competitive green hydrogen value chains across Africa.
Additionally, AGHS 2026 aims to build an investable project pipeline, offering investors and financiers greater visibility of emerging opportunities. Strengthening African cooperation is also on the agenda, with a focus on investment, market development, and regional value chains.
The DEE emphasized that the summit will address interdependent enablers such as finance, supply, demand, infrastructure, technology, policy, and community participation, all of which are crucial for scaling projects.
