Officials have called it “one of the worst weather storms in the history of our country”. Mudslides have trapped people under buildings, with more floods expected. There are reports that the rescue effort is being hampered by poor visibility as a helicopter continues to bring people back to safety. Mzansi… it can only be jazz

After years of searching, I finally met my brother David Serame in the middle of London in 1987. He had not changed one bit and was jolly as ever. It felt like time had not lapsed and we picked up where we left off. Catching up after so many years can sometimes be tricky as most discussions are quite erratic as you try to squeeze in as much information as you can in a short space of time. About a week or so later, he sh… Continue reading “Mzansi… it can only be jazz”

The absence of former president, Ian Khama, from the domestic political scene is coming at a great cost to not just the party that he founded but the opposition movement as well. Five months after Khama fled into South Africa to beat a Directorate of Intelligence Services and Security deadline that required him to hand over some pistols, the party that he founded is going through a really rough time. A fortnight ago, his twin brothers, Tshekedi and Anthony, were arrested and spent two nights in jail. We understand that following his release, Tshekedi and his family joined Khama in South Africa… Continue reading “Khama’s absence, internal wrangling weakening BPF”

Prospects for the global economy have darkened since the outbreak of war in Ukraine on February 24, prompting the World Trade Organisation (WTO) economists to reassess their projections for world trade over the next two years. The organization now expects merchandise trade volume growth of 3.0% in 2022—down from its previous forecast of 4.7%—and 3.4% in 2023, but these estimates are less certain than usual due to the fluid nature of the conflict (Table 1). The most immediate economic impact of the crisis has been a sharp rise in commodity prices. Despite their small shares in world trade and o… Continue reading “Russia-Ukraine Conflict Puts Fragile Global Trade Recovery At Risk – WTO”
