Bainsvlei: The community at Langenhoven Market in Elias Motswaledi Street welcomed the Station Commander of Bainsvlei, Lieutenant Colonel Lorato Mabeleng, the Visible Policing Commander Captain Derish Naidoo, Community Police Forum, Sector Forum, Youth Desk, and Social Crime Prevention Unit members with wide open hands. The soft approach initiative, Operation Shanela II, carried out with E2 (Eyes and Ears) Project partners, was aimed at building community relations, crime awareness, and public education regarding fraud that takes place over cyberspace. Langenhoven market was an ideal simulation of how elderly people can avoid being scammed through ventures such as Facebook Marketplace.
According to South African Police Service, the Market manager, Ms. Estelle Combrinck, welcomed the team and offered Captain Naidoo the opportunity to speak to the community and raise awareness over the loudspeaker used to make announcements. It was a festive mood everywhere as community members couldn't wait their turn to receive pamphlets and take a photo with the police. One victim, albeit the one who lost only R50.00 through a cyberspace scam, was too happy to share safety ideas with the police. The community requested the police to bring the service to the market more often.
