Cabinet Approves Closure of Gauteng E-Tolls

Pretoria: The Cabinet has officially sanctioned the plan put forth by the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to terminate the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), commonly recognized as e-tolls.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Executive has also endorsed the orderly resolution of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) litigation. This includes addressing any residual litigation exposure and concluding all matters related to the historical recovery of e-toll debt. The decision follows the government's resolution to cease the electronic tolling system on the GFIP, which became effective on 12 April 2024.

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, noted that SANRAL recommended writing off the debt owed by road users who failed to pay, with National Treasury set to cover this debt. However, road users who had paid the toll fees would not be reimbursed as the fees were lawful at the time. Ntshavheni shared these updates with the media following the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 03 June 2026.
