Cabinet Welcomes Progress at Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium in Cape Town

Cape Town: Cabinet has welcomed the successful conclusion of the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA) 2025, held in Cape Town, from 26 to 27 May 2025. The two-day symposium brought together government leaders, infrastructure funding representatives, construction sector representatives, and technical experts to discuss and share strategies and best practices for infrastructure development in the country.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Symposium saw the unveiling of the country's second edition of the construction book: 'A Repository Of Funded Infrastructure Projects' for procurement in 2025/2026. During the symposium, the new top seven infrastructure project priorities, stemming from Bid Window 1 for project preparation, were announced, uplifting the nation's drive to use infrastructure to grow the economy, create jobs, and build sustainable communities.

Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, highlighted during a post-Cabinet media briefing that the total value of projects currently in construction in the country is over R313.5 billion, with the energy sector infrastructure project pipeline including R180 billion of embedded generation investment. The new top seven infrastructure priorities for 2025/26 as announced by Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) include various projects such as the Boegoebaai Port and Rail Development in the Northern Cape and Project Alpha 300MW Gas to Power Project.

On Tuesday, SAnews spoke to the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, who said that South Africa is on a path of accelerated progress with infrastructure development fueling economic growth and job creation. Macpherson cited the second edition of the Construction Book, which showcases 250 fully funded infrastructure projects worth at least R238 billion, as an example of the government's commitment to turning South Africa into a construction site. He emphasized the importance of timely and budget-conscious project preparation to ensure success, highlighting the nation's significant investment in public infrastructure.
